“The Humpty Dumpty Adjustment”

After experiencing birth, a new mother’s body is often sore, achey and in a bit of pain. Even after the initial discomfort wears off (and the intense joy of having a glowing new baby is all she can think about) her body is not what it used to be. A gentle chiropractic adjustment (or series of adjustments) can make a world of difference in the years to come, as well as how her body tolerates any future pregnancies.

The process of birthing a baby is traumatic on both mother and child, even in the most idyllic of scenarios. It only makes sense that afterwards, both Mom and babe would benefit from a gentle “tune up” to make sure no delicate structures have been moved from their natural locations. And as most mothers know, pretty much EVERYTHING feels like it was moved in some way, shape or form!

A Mama’s first postpartum adjustment ideally occurs between one day and one month after birth and is lovingly referred to by Dr. Amanda as the “Humpty Dumpty Adjustment.”

As in the old children’s tale, Mom’s body has seemingly fallen to pieces and could use some help “getting it all back together again.”

Mama is recommended to get her first postpartum adjustment as soon as she feels able, to take advantage of the large amounts of Relaxin hormone present in her blood, leftover from her pregnancy. Relaxin is produced prenatally, to allow for stretching and relaxing of ligaments, muscles and tissues in Mom’s body so that a growing belly doesn’t cause too much damage. After birth, especially if a new Mama is breastfeeding, amounts of Relaxin remain in her blood and can prove very beneficial in providing her postpartum chiropractic care.

If Mom waits too long, the adjustment can be more uncomfortable, however it is still very wise to replace misaligned joints and ligaments as close to your baby’s birth day as possible. While one month or less is highly recommended, if you are still breastfeeding, your body is continuing to produce some amount of Relaxin hormone.

I have been seeing Dr. Amanda for over two years, for nine months of which I was pregnant. Not only is she a passionate, educated, and qualified chiropractor, she is also a super fun and friendly person who loves her clients and truly wants the best for them. My husband has also seen her for chiropractic care and our daughter has been too, including her first visit at just four days old! Dr. Amanda’s attention to my specific needs and comfort level made both my pre- and post-delivery body so much more enjoyable to be in. I will continue to see her despite changes to insurance coverage because she’s just that good!

It’s never too late…

It’s very common for new Mothers to get very busy and not make it to the Chiropractor for their postpartum checkup within the first few months. Some Mothers had no idea about the vast benefits of Chiropractic care prenatally, and inquire about postpartum sessions even months to years following the birth of their child.

Although the benefits of Relaxin hormone are great, it’s never too late to seek out postpartum care for a previously pregnant body. The process of growing and birthing a child does a fair amount of impact on a mother’s body, and a series of Chiropractic adjustments can really make a difference in Mom’s quality of life.

  • Bending over to pick up the baby, toddler, or even a basket of laundry can inflame irritated joints in Mom’s lower back and hips.
  • Breastfeeding (and looking down at an adorable newborn!) can cause “Nursing Neck,” resulting in neck pain, stiffness, tension and even headaches.
  • Twisting, rotating and even seemingly normal activities can pull on Mama’s joints, still soft from pregnancy. This can cause rib/chest pain, mid-back and shoulder aches and so much more.
